Grave Marking in Sandwich Old Town Cemetery

The Cape Cod Chapter Sons of the American Revolution presented a Grave Marking Ceremony September 13th at 10am in the Sandwich Old Town Burying Ground for Dr. Nathaniel Freeman. Dr. Freeman, the great, great, great grandson of Sandwich founder, Edmund Freeman, was the head of the Sandwich patriots. He lead the closure of the royal courts in Barnstable County, rose to the rank of Brigadier General in the Massachusetts Revolutionary Militia, and represented Sandwich in the General Court.

Mike Welch, who portrayed Dr. Freeman in the 1700s BASH this past Summer, re-enacted Dr. Freeman again. The Color Guard of the Massachusetts Sons of the American Revolution was there in uniform to offer a musket salute in honor of Dr. Freeman. The public joined in this festive, respectful, and colorful celebration of the life of perhaps Sandwich’s greatest patriot.

Sandwich Parade

Following the grave marking at 1-3pm was the two-mile Our Sandwich Journey parade — one of the grandest parades of them all. The parade featured marching bands, drum & bugle corps, pipe & drum bands, numerous floats, classic cars, Shriner Clowns, organizations, teams, companies, and more, much more. Everyone loves a parade!
