Members of the South Carolina Society invite compatriots and guests to join them in Greenville, S.C., as they host the 124th Annual Congress. Mark your calendars for July 18-23.

Situated in the Upcountry and sitting at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Greenville is one of the most vibrant cities in the Southeast. With a booming technology sector and as home to BMW North America and Michelin—along with their array of supporting businesses—the area is hopping. This city has a lot of Southern charm to offer SAR visitors, and you may want to extend your stay.

The Upcountry is a setting rich in Revolutionary War history, with nearby sites such as King’s Mountain and Cowpens. The Revolution War’s Southern Theater contains more battle sites in South Carolina than any other location.

An Incredible Main Street

The highly acclaimed Main Street are filled with restaurant and shopping desires. With accolades from Forbes magazine to Southern Living, it’s the location of more than 90 dining establishments along with quaint shopping, within a few minutes’ walk. The elegant, sophisticated Hyatt Regency Greenville anchors the north end of Main Street. Strolling down the street, visitors will find outdoor dining, restaurants of varied cuisines, and shopping for gifts to take home. Along the way, stop to visit the Nathanael Greene statue. At the south end is West End and the nearby River Falls Park with an impressive, 355-foot-long pedestrian bridge.

Friday Night – Upcountry Museum

So, what is the “Upcountry?” The historical reception and tour on Friday evening will provide the answer as to why people fled the coastal areas in the summer for the Upcountry.

This event will include food, fun and a social gathering. A tour of the Upcountry History Museum, a 2010 Rand McNally “Best of the Road” honoree, wih4>provide an understanding of the role and impact of South Carolina’s northwest 15 counties from the 18th century to the present. From static displays to interactive exhibits, this award-winning museum design wih4>delight compatriots and guests.

Tours

Many suggest that the Revolutionary War was won in South Carolina, and you’ll have a chance to visit crucial battle sites such as King’s Mountain, Cowpens and Ninety Six. You’ll leave with more insight on the battles thanks to the narrated bus tours, National Park Service videos on the bus, and re-enactors.

Just where were those patriots and British troops standing in the field? Well, on Saturday the South Carolina Society has arranged for re-enactors to take up positions to provide a full understanding of the battle scenes.

As a tribute to the Congress held in 1930, the same menu wih4>be replicated. So, if you’ve been to King’s Mountain, come again and see it from a new viewpoint. The Saturday tour continues on to Cowpens, where Gen. Nathanael Greene and Gen. Daniel Morgan crushed the British during this battle—the beginning of the end.

The Wednesday tour will return to another crucial site: the Siege of Ninety Six. Greene and Francis Marion, subject of the 2014 Poster Contest, drove the British from this site. It’s an exciting story of how the patriots overcame the world’s greatest army.

Memorial Service

The historic Christ Church (Episcopal) is the location for the Memorial Service. The church, designed by Joel Poinsett, was consecrated in 1854 and is the oldest organized religious body in Greenville. Of special interest is the Last Supper stained glass created by Franz Mayer & Co. of Munich. The color guard will lead a procession to the church down the tree-lined Main Street in a picture-perfect setting. Transportation will be available for the less mobile.

For the Ladies

You’ll love downtown Greenville! You probably haven’t attended a Congress setting quite like this one, with quaint shops and al fresco dining.

Through the church’s courtyard, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the charming Parish Hall, with wood-paneled walls and fireplaces, is the location of the First Lady’s Reception.

The historic Poinsett Club will be the venue for the First Lady’s Luncheon on Tuesday. Originally a private home, the club features stunning Colonial architecture and carefully preserved décor. A highlight of the luncheon will be a presentation about Joel Roberts Poinsett, for whom we now know the Poinsettia!
