The website of the Rhode Island Society of the Sons of the American Revolution has a link called "Battle of Rhode Island" devoted to the Battle of Rhode Island and the memorial placed by the Newport, RI NAACP in Portsmouth, RI. The 1st Rhode Island Regiment (also know as the Black Regiment) played a significant part in the battle on August 28, 1778. Granite walls at the memorial at Patriots Park in Portsmouth, RI list the blacks and Native Americans who were members of the 1st Rhode Island. In addition to the information found on our website, the Rhode Island Society is publishing a transcript of the original 1781 Regiment Book of the 1st Rhode Island this fall. This 170+ page hardcover book will offer outstanding information on the soldiers who served including their physical details (color of hair and skin, height, weight, occupation, etc.) . It is our hope that this book will be instrumental in fostering interest and furthering genealogical research thus enabling descendants of soldiers of the 1st Rhode Island to join the Sons of the American Revolution.

I am a African American home educator with three sons. It isn't always easy to find resources about the African Americans heroes of the American revolution online, so I was pleased and am very thankful to have run across this site. It is wonderful thing for our boys to see. It's is important for them to know that black men helped build this country, since so often the general public seems to want to perpetuate the images ( some times illusions) that it is they who break it down.
